Notice that God doesn't just make woman from the ground the way He made Adam. He takes from Adam. This is significant. Woman comes from man's own substance—they share the same life. The deep sleep is important too. Adam doesn't watch or choose this. It's a gift, a surprise from God.

Commentators from Philo onward have noted the symbolic significance: the rib comes from the side, not from the head (implying authority over her) or feet (implying subservience to him), but from the side—suggesting lateral equality. The modern Reformation scholar Peter Stuhlmacher emphasized that this unconscious passivity on the human's part makes him a recipient of grace, not an agent of creation.

Significance
