Language and setting

This verse is theologically rich and grammatically complex. The phrase 'everything exposed becomes visible' (panta ta elenchomena phaneroutai phōti) involves illumination as both revelation and transformation. Some early interpreters (notably the Gnostic texts and Origen) read this as suggesting universal salvation—that exposure to light eventually redeems all things. But in Paul's context, it more likely means that when darkness is exposed by light, the darkness loses its concealing power and is judged; simultaneously, whatever genuinely reflects truth becomes luminous. The logic is alchemical: light cannot coexist with darkness—one must triumph.
