A Galilean fisherman whose impulsive, passionate personality made him both the most prominent and the most humanly relatable of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Peter walked on water (and sank), confessed Jesus as the Christ, and then denied knowing Him three times on the night of the crucifixion. After the resurrection, Jesus restored Peter by the Sea of Galilee, commissioning him to ‘feed my sheep.’ At Pentecost, Peter preached boldly and three thousand believed. He became the leading figure of the early church and, according to tradition, was crucified upside down in Rome.
