The scholarly reading

Peter's confession su ei ho Christos ho huios tou theou tou zōntos ('You are the Christ, the Son of the living God') combines the messianic title (Christos) with divine sonship (huios tou theou). The addition of tou zōntos ('the living') distinguishes YHWH from the dead idols of Caesarea Philippi.

Language and setting

This confession goes beyond the parallel accounts in Mark and Luke by adding 'the Son of the living God.' It represents the fullest christological confession in the Synoptic Gospels up to this point.

Significance

Peter's words are the theological climax of Matthew's first half. In the shadow of pagan temples, a fisherman declares the truth that the religious elite have missed.
