The second son of Levi and grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. The Kohathites were assigned the most sacred duty among the Levites—carrying the Ark of the Covenant and the holy vessels of the tabernacle during Israel’s wilderness journeys. This responsibility was so serious that touching the sacred objects directly meant death. Kohath lived 133 years and his clan became the priestly elite among the Levitical families.
I Am the Lord
God reaffirms His covenant name and His promise. Even when the people are too crushed to listen.
These were the sons of Levi by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. These were the names of the sons of Gershon by their clans: Libni and Shimei. The sons of Kohath by their clans were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
One tribe given entirely to God's service. Their job: carry the holy things and stand between the people and God's holiness.
