All those led by God's Spirit—moved and guided by His direction—are thereby identified as God's children, His sons and daughters. The Spirit's guidance becomes the credential of authentic sonship.

Language and setting

Ago (to lead, guide) evokes the Spirit's direction through wilderness wandering (Isaiah 63:14) and the prophetic tradition of being led by God's word. Paul is not describing vague 'spiritual feelings' but the pattern of progressive, recognizable transformation toward Christlikeness. This verse marks the transition to the intimate family language of verses 14-17: sons (huioi) of God, a status secured by the Spirit's internal testimony and external guidance. The phrase 'sons of God' (huioi theou) carries tremendous weight—in Jewish thought, Israel as a whole was God's firstborn (Exodus 4:22), but here it is extended to individual believers, gentile and Jew alike.
