Baptism in Scripture is always about identification and union. Just as the Israelites passed through the Red Sea and became God's covenant people, now believers pass through baptism and become identified with Christ's death and resurrection. It's the same pattern of God setting His people free.

Paul grounds his argument in baptism: all believers have been baptized 'into Christ Jesus'—that is, into union with him—and therefore into his death.

The phrase εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν (eis Christon Iēsoun)—literally 'into Christ Jesus'—uses the preposition of movement and incorporation found throughout Pauline epistles.
