Language and setting

The phrase ὃ γὰρ ἀπέθανεν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν ἐφάπαξ (ho gar apethanen tē hamartia apethanen ephapax) uses ἐφάπαξ (once and for all), a term from Hebrews 9-10 emphasizing the unrepeatable, definitive character of Christ's sacrifice. The dative τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ('to sin') indicates the object of death: Christ died in such a way as to terminate sin's claim over him. Conversely, ζῇ τῷ θεῷ (zē tō theō)—'lives to God'—describes existence in perfect alignment with God's will, the inverse of sin-oriented existence.
