Romans 3:28, in plain English

To be clear: God accepts you because you trust Jesus, completely apart from anything you do to follow the law.

Why it's here

Paul states this so plainly because some people probably still weren't getting it. In the Roman church, there were likely teachers insisting that Gentile believers needed to adopt Jewish practices to be fully Christian. Paul is shutting that down with absolute clarity.

This is one of the foundational verses of the Reformation 1,400 years later. When Martin Luther was struggling with guilt, this verse—'faith apart from works'—opened his eyes to the gospel.

The scholarly reading

People are declared righteous by God through faith in Christ, completely independent of trying to keep the law's commands.

Language and setting

This verse distills the central claim of the Reformation and remains Paul's most succinct statement of justification. The phrase 'apart from' (χωρὶς) is categorical—not 'less important than' or 'supplemented by,' but entirely separate from. For a Jewish auditor, this would sound like heresy; Paul isn't saying the law is bad, but that moral performance cannot be the mechanism of justification. Works of the law (ἔργα νόμου) refers specifically to commandments (especially circumcision, dietary laws, Sabbath observance) that marked Jewish covenantal identity.

Significance

This echoes Genesis 15:6: 'Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.' Faith, not ethnic privilege or legal achievement, has always been the true entry into covenant. Paul is not innovating; he's returning to the original design.

27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.

28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
