Language and setting

The citation of Isaiah 59:8 concludes the catena with an eschatological contrast: the way of peace (Hebrew: shalom; Greek: eirḗnē) represents wholeness, right relationship, and the fullness of covenant blessing. That humanity has 'not known' (Greek: ouk egnōsan) this way suggests not mere ignorance but a state of complete alienation from the shalom-vision that structures biblical soteriology. Barth argued this verse encapsulates the human condition: we are oriented toward violence, not reconciliation.

This foreshadows the gospel's proclamation of 'peace with God' (Romans 5:1), which becomes possible only through Christ's reconciling work, showing how the diagnosis of disease (verses 10-17) sets up the presentation of the cure.
