The Greek προσωποληψία (prosopolepsia—lit. 'face-taking,' favoring based on external appearance or status) was a critical point of contention in early Jewish-Christian relations; Paul uses the strongest possible negation (οὐ γάρ ἐστιν προσωποληψία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ) to assert that God's assessment penetrates social masks and covenantal self-understanding to evaluate actual orientation toward goodness.

Significance

This verse is the hinge between the particular Jewish boasting Paul will address in verses 17-29 and the universal claim that all humanity stands guilty before God (Romans 3:9-20), paving the way for the exclusivity claim of faith in Christ as the only means of justification for all peoples.
