This echoes Jesus's call to follow him and echoes Old Testament warnings against adopting the thinking patterns of surrounding nations. The renewal of the mind is central to becoming who God is calling you to be in Christ.

Believers must reject the prevailing value systems and behavioral patterns of society, allowing their minds to be fundamentally reformed so they can discern and embrace God's will.

Language and setting

Roman culture in the first century was saturated with pagan religious practices, gladiatorial spectacles, sexual permissiveness, and economic exploitation. The Greek term schematizomai (be conformed) suggests a passive yielding to external pressure—literally being squeezed into the world's mold. Conversely, metamorphoō (transformed) conveys the dynamic, internal renovation that Paul elsewhere connects to the Spirit's work. Origen and later Augustine emphasized that this 'renewing of the mind' (anakainōsis) is not mere intellectual assent but a reorientation of one's deepest patterns of perception and judgment.

Significance
