In a church made up of different social classes and backgrounds, people needed permission and encouragement to treat each other as genuine family. The language of 'brotherly love' was already there in their minds—Paul is intensifying it.

Jesus redefined family as those who follow him. Now Paul is saying that church family relationships should actually compete in devotion and honor—a reversal of how most human hierarchies work.

Believers should cultivate familial affection toward one another and actively outdo each other in showing honor and respect.

Language and setting

Philostorgos (brotherly love—literally, affection like that between family members) elevates the congregation beyond professional collegiality to kinship. The exhortation to 'outdo yourselves' (proēgoumenoi, 'taking the lead') in honoring others inverts the competitive honor-seeking of Mediterranean culture: rather than jockeying for precedence, believers compete in bestowing honor on others. Origen saw this as reflecting God's character—God honors creatures despite their unworthiness. The command appears radical because honor in that world was believed to be limited; Paul suggests that genuine honor given to others doesn't diminish one's own.

Significance

This realizes Jesus' command to love one's neighbor as oneself and his teaching that the greatest becomes servant of all. It transforms the competitive zero-sum game of ancient patronage into a community of mutual honor.
