From Genesis 3 onward, humanity has lived under a curse. Here we see it finally, completely reversed—and more than that, the separation between God and people is ended forever.

The scholarly reading

The curse that resulted from humanity's disobedience in Genesis will be completely removed, and God's servants will worship directly within the divine presence.

Language and setting

Early Christian communities inherited Jewish theodicy struggles—how could a righteous God permit Roman persecution? John's vision argues that the curse of Genesis 3 itself will be ontologically reversed; the suffering of his addressees is not permanent but penultimate.

Significance

This is the culmination of the soteriological narrative—from Genesis 3's fall and curse through Israel's wilderness wandering to Revelation's final reversal. What theologians like Anselm would later theorize as satisfaction for sin here appears as complete obliteration of sin's consequences, not merely forgiveness but cosmic restoration.

1Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

2down the middle of the main street of the city. On either side of the river stood a tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit and yielding a fresh crop for each month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be within the city, and His servants will worship Him.
