Come, Lord Jesus

Jesus says one final time that He's coming soon, and John responds by praying the prayer that every believer who understands these things would pray: 'Come, Lord Jesus.'
This is the book's final words—not instruction, but longing. John and his churches were tired, suffering, and homesick for Jesus. The whole book builds to this: an urgent, hopeful prayer for His return.
Jesus, then John (and the whole believing community)
Revelation began with 'the revelation of Jesus Christ.' It ends with His people calling Him back. From Genesis forward, history moves toward this moment—the return of Jesus and the restoration of all things. The Christian response is to say with John: 'Come, Lord Jesus.'
Christ's final attestation—'Yes, I am coming soon'—is met with the church's prayer, 'Come, Lord Jesus,' sealing Revelation with communal longing and affirmation.
The persecuted churches are given the last word—their prayer. This is not passive reception but active eschatological participation. They stake their hope and identity on this promise, transforming their present suffering into anticipatory joy.
Jesus Christ and the Church
The Aramaic Maranatha surfaces here in essence—the church's own prayer mirrors the Spirit's call in verse 17. This ending refuses closure; Revelation doesn't conclude with sealed visions but with an open, urgent, repeated call for Christ's return. The church's 'Amen' ratifies the entire prophecy as their own esperanza.
18I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.
19And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book.
20He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!
