The scholarly reading

Those choosing unrighteousness will continue in it, and those practicing righteousness will continue in it—suggesting that the judgment crystallizes eternal trajectories rather than changing them.

Language and setting

This shocking verse presents a vision of ultimate moral bifurcation—no deathbed conversions, no final appeals. For John's community, it affirms that their present faithfulness matters absolutely; compromise now determines eternal destiny. It also warns against complacency regarding moral practice.

This appears to echo Ezekiel 3:27 and anticipates the harsh dualism of Matthew 25's sheep and goats judgment. Medieval theologians like Aquinas struggled with this verse's apparent predestinarianism, but John seems to present it as a logical consequence of sustained moral choice—we become what we practice, and in the eschaton, that trajectory becomes irreversible.
