Throughout Scripture, God's kingdom means access and belonging. Jesus said 'whoever comes to me I will never drive away' (John 6:37). Ancient cities closed their gates at nightfall as both practical necessity and symbolic boundary—marking separation between civilized space and threatening wilderness. For John's audience in Ephesus and other Mediterranean cities, gates represented security, control, and the human management of time itself. The removal of this need signals a cosmos where threat has been definitively eliminated and the arbitrary divisions of day and night—metaphorically, of sacred and secular time—have ceased.

Significance

The perpetual openness of the gates represents the fulfillment of what Zechariah 14:7 enigmatically promised: a day that 'is neither day nor night,' dissolving temporal categories and their associated anxieties. It's the ultimate answer to humanity's fear-driven need for boundaries, enclosures, and protection—a new creation where vulnerability and predation no longer dictate architectural and social necessity.

23And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, because the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its lamp.

24By its light the nations will walk, and into it the kings of the earth will bring their glory.
