The walls are made of jasper, and the city itself is pure gold so clear it's like glass—materials of absolute purity and value, showing this city is eternally precious and incorruptible.
In the ancient world, gold was the most valuable material and jasper was among the most beautiful stones. John is saying: everything here is of ultimate worth and beauty; nothing will decay or lose its value.

Jesus said He came that we might have life abundantly. This city—made of the most precious substances—is what that abundance looks like made physical.
The wall is constructed of jasper, the city itself of pure gold transparent as glass—materials of immeasurable worth and optical clarity, dissolving the distinction between material and spiritual, precious and functional.
Jasper and gold were the costliest materials known to antiquity; for an impoverished, persecuted church, this material extravagance was eschatological compensation. The transparency 'as glass' (*hōs hualos*) is peculiar: gold, crystalline glass-like—a paradox that indicates these materials have been transfigured, transformed into something transcending natural law. The city is simultaneously fortress-wall (jasper) and habitation (gold), protection and dwelling, all in perfect aesthetic unity.

The materials echo the tabernacle and temple's precious materials (Exodus 25-37), but instead of being confined to cultic vessels, they comprise the entire urban space. What was once sacred furnishing becomes the fabric of the redeemed cosmos. This suggests the 'sacralization' of creation itself—no longer a sacred/profane divide, but the entire space is consecrated.
16The city lies foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he measured the city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia in length and width and height.
