Daniel prophesied about the Son of Man coming with clouds, and the Zechariah passage about piercing speaks of the Messiah. For John's churches, this wasn't abstract theology; it was the promise that vindication was coming. Every eye seeing Him meant no one could deny it—no secret rapture, no hidden coming.

This is the fulfillment of promises made throughout Scripture about the Messiah's return. Jesus Himself quoted Daniel 7 about this. It's the hope that anchors everything.

The scholarly reading

Christ will return visibly in the clouds; all humanity will witness him, including those who crucified him; and all peoples will mourn in response to his appearing.

Language and setting

This verse explicitly combines Daniel 7:13 ('coming with the clouds') with Zechariah 12:10 ('they will look on the one they have pierced'). For Asian churches facing persecution, it was a staggering claim: the one whom their persecutors rejected would be publicly vindicated, and the very ones who opposed believers would witness their vindication. This is consolatory theology.

Significance

This is the Gospel's future tense—the promise that runs through Matthew 24-25, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, and the entire apocalyptic tradition, now articulated as the ultimate narrative resolution where the hidden exaltation (Christ at God's right hand) becomes publicly manifest and irreversible.
