The greeting comes from Jesus Christ, who is simultaneously the faithful witness to God's truth, the firstborn from the dead through resurrection, and the ruler over all earthly powers.

Language and setting

In a world where Caesar demanded loyalty and worship, John redescribes Jesus with titles the Roman empire reserved for itself: faithful witness (against imperial propaganda), firstborn from the dead (universal resurrection authority exceeding any pharaoh), and ruler of kings (explicitly subordinating all earthly kingdoms to Christ). This was politically explosive theology.

Significance
