The Darkest Psalm

This is the turning point where the psalmist doesn't just describe his suffering; he attributes it directly to God. He's not blaming Satan or bad luck—he's confronting God with what feels like divine abandonment.

This honest accusation toward God is characteristic of biblical lament. It's not the faith of someone pretending everything is fine; it's the faith of someone who trusts God enough to tell Him He seems cruel.
God himself is depicted as the agent who has placed the psalmist in the deepest pit — the lowest darkness — suggesting divine abandonment is itself an act of divine will.
The Hebrew בור (bor, 'pit') functions metaphorically and literally: it evokes both the grave and the cosmic chaos-waters below. 'Lowest' (תחתית, tachtiyot) and 'darkest' (אפלה, aphela) employ superlatives suggesting ultimate degradation. Critically, the subject of 'laid me' is God — this is not misfortune but divine placement. This is theodicy at its most acute: the sufferer indicts God as author of his torment.

The psalmist refuses the comfortable theodicies available to him — he will not blame demons, or fate, or sin. Instead, he names God as the agent of his suffering. This echoes Job's accusation but without Job's eventual vindication. The psalm leaves this tension unresolved, which is precisely its theological integrity.
