As they continue the journey, each step draws them into greater strength and deeper encounter with God, until they finally stand before Him in Zion. It's a progressive drawing near.
The pilgrims aren't collapsing halfway there—they're being sustained. Each mile makes them stronger, not weaker, because they're moving toward their destination. 'From strength to strength' is a beautiful rhythm: weakness becomes strength becomes greater strength. Finally they arrive in Zion and stand in God's actual presence.
The community again, describing the accumulating grace they experience on the journey—how God meets them repeatedly along the way.
This captures the spiritual reality: seeking God is not exhausting; it's energizing. The closer you get to Him, the stronger you become. Every stage of spiritual growth prepares you for the next. This continues into eternity—we go from strength to strength as we grow in knowing Him.

The verb 'yiraeh' (each appears/will be seen) is passive or reflexive, suggesting that arrival at Zion constitutes being seen by God — the destination is mutual encounter. Zion functions here not merely as geographical destination but as theological category: the place where heaven and earth intersect, where God's presence concentrates. Calvin emphasized that this progression reflects sanctification's trajectory in individual Christian life — not sudden perfection but incremental spiritual strengthening toward ultimate vision of God.
