Notice that even after describing how God let them go, there's still this 'if only.' The door isn't permanently closed. God hasn't given up hope. This reflects the prophetic pattern where judgment always contains within it an invitation to return.

The repeated *lu* (if only) construction creates what grammarians call a 'wish formula,' expressing what scholars like Mowinckel have identified as characteristic of penitential psalms—the contemplation of what-might-have-been as a pathway back to what-could-still-be. This is not passive resignation but rather a rhetorical strategy designed to reawaken desire for covenant restoration. The *derakhim* (ways) invokes the entire framework of Torah observance and covenantal conduct.

Significance

This echoes the structure of conditional covenantal theology: blessing follows obedience (Deuteronomy 28:1-14), and this invocation of the alternative maintains the possibility of repentance and restoration even after judgment.
