Where it sits in the story

This is the answer to Deuteronomy 6:6-9, the Shema. You must talk about God's works continuously—when you sit, when you walk, when you lie down. This is how covenant faith survives.

The scholarly reading

The community commits itself to unbroken transmission, declaring that they will not withhold these narratives from their descendants but will actively rehearse God's praise and mighty deeds.

Language and setting

The vow here (לֹא נִכְחִד, *lo nikhḥad*—we will not hide) sets up a contrast with what will later be described as forgetting and abandonment. This is intentional, volitional transmission—a counterforce against the entropy that threatens collective memory in any diaspora or post-catastrophic context.

Significance

This establishes the theological mandate that undergirds the entire psalm: Israel's survival depends upon conscious, deliberate rehearsal of God's works, lest each generation default to the stubborn ignorance of its predecessors.

2I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the beginning,

3that we have heard and known and our fathers have relayed to us.

4We will not hide them from their children but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might and the wonders He has performed.

5For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children,

6that the coming generation would know them— even children yet to be born— to arise and tell their own children
