God is the only one who performs wonders, and He's displayed His strength not in hiding but openly among the nations where people can see it.
He's moving from personal crisis to cosmic perspective. God's power isn't secret or uncertain; it's on display for all humanity to witness. If anyone saw God work, everyone could.
Asaph, remembering God's public, visible works
Throughout Scripture, God's miracles are public events meant to be witnessed. The plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, Jesus's resurrection—all visible, all verifiable.
The psalmist identifies God specifically as the God who performs wonders and displays His strength among the nations—sovereign power visible in history.
'El' (God) rather than the covenant name YHWH suggests the emphasis here on God's universal, transcendent power rather than merely His particular covenant relationship with Israel. 'Niflaot' (wonders) and 'geburah' (strength) are signature vocabulary for God's mighty acts, particularly the Exodus and wilderness wandering. The phrase 'among the peoples' (ba-amim) suggests God's reputation extends beyond Israel—His glory is known to the nations. This represents what later theology would call God's 'general revelation'—His power evident even to those outside the covenant.
The psalmist continues his restoration through doctrinal affirmation of God's cosmic supremacy.
This universalization of God's power connects to the Psalter's broader trajectory toward eschatological hope: that all nations will eventually acknowledge God's sovereignty. It anticipates the missionary commission and Paul's claim that God's invisible attributes are evident to all (Romans 1:20).
