Don't push your arrogance so far as to defy God Himself. Speaking with an outstretched neck is a picture of defiant rebellion—and that's the line you don't want to cross.
This verse intensifies the warning. It's not just about ordinary pride anymore—it's about directly challenging God, speaking as if He doesn't matter. You can imagine wicked leaders literally speaking with pride, literally looking down their noses at the righteous poor. God is saying: I see it, and you're walking a dangerous path.

Every figure in the Bible who directly defies God learns this lesson the hard way—Sennacherib, Goliath, even the religious leaders who reject Jesus. The pattern is consistent: rebellion against God doesn't go unnoticed or unpunished.
The wicked are warned against arrogant defiance directed toward heaven itself—they must abandon both their rebellious posture and their audacious speech.
The phrase עֲלֵי־עַד (ʿălē-ʿad, 'against heaven') represents the nadir of human presumption: rebellion becomes literally cosmic in scope. The 'outstretched neck' (צַוָּאר, tsavvár) denotes the stiff-necked posture of refusal that biblical theology diagnoses as the deepest spiritual malady (Exodus 33:3-5; Acts 7:51). These are not accidental transgressions but deliberate, choreographed acts of cosmic insubordination.
