The 'carvings' (pe'tukhim, literally 'opened' or 'opened-out' designs) refer to the elaborate reliefs and sculptures that adorned the Temple walls, particularly the cherubim imagery of the Holy of Holies described in 1 Kings 6:23-35. This wasn't incidental damage but targeted obliteration of the visual theology embedded in sacred architecture — what we might call the 'iconography of presence.'
