Psalm 71:6

Growing Old with God

I have leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my mother’s womb. My praise is always for You. Psalm 71:6 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Psalm 71:6, in plain English

From the very beginning—even before you could choose—God was there holding you, taking care of you, and that's why praise is the only reasonable response.

Why it's here

The psalmist is accessing a deep truth: God's faithfulness doesn't start when you become aware of it. He was at work in your life before you knew anything about it. That realization is humbling and should produce gratitude.

Who's speaking

Someone reflecting on God's hidden providence throughout their life.

Where it sits in the story

This reaches back to God's role in creation and formation (Psalm 139:13-14) and forward to Paul's realization that he was set apart before birth (Galatians 1:15). Your life was never an accident to God.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

The psalmist credits God with sustenance from birth itself, even from the womb—making God the author of his very existence and protector from the beginning.

Language and setting

The Hebrew 'pulled me from my mother's womb' (גֹּזַל מִמְּעֵי אִמִּי, gazal mimme'ei immi) uses language suggesting rescue or extraction, as if birth itself was an act of divine deliverance. This extends the metaphor of God as refuge backward to the psalmist's origins, making dependence on God not a recent crisis-response but the fundamental structure of his existence.

Voice

The speaker shifts to contemplative gratitude, recognizing that his present appeals to God merely continue what God has been doing since before consciousness itself.

Significance

This theology of divine guardianship from conception appears in Psalm 139 and Job 10, and becomes central to Christian theology of providence. The medieval Scholastics, following Augustine, saw this as evidence of God's eternal knowledge and predestining care.

In context

Psalm 71:4–8

4Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and ruthless.

5For You are my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence from my youth.

6I have leaned on You since birth; You pulled me from my mother’s womb. My praise is always for You.

7I have become a portent to many, but You are my strong refuge.

8My mouth is filled with Your praise and with Your splendor all day long.

Read all of Psalm 71 — From youth to gray hairs, the psalmist has known God's faithfulness. Now aging and weak, he asks: do not forsake me when my strength is spent.
