The psalmist now shifts to remembering a specific moment when God led His people through the wilderness—when He literally marched at the front, protecting and guiding them through wasteland.
This is almost certainly referring to the Exodus, when God led Israel out of Egypt through the desert. The listeners would have known this story by heart, so invoking it here connects them to that ancient triumph—you're part of that same story of redemption.
