Language and setting

The repetition of the request to be heard (šimʿâ and haqqšīb, 'hear' and 'give ear') reflects the anxiety that God might remain silent or inattentive. In ancient Israelite piety, silence from heaven was experienced as abandonment. This verse establishes the rhetorical structure of the whole psalm: the speaker must first secure God's attention before proceeding to articulate his complaint.
