We hold on to God, waiting and trusting in Him, because He's our help and our shield—our protection against whatever comes.
The psalm ends not with a command but with a simple statement of trust. 'Our soul waits'—there's an active patience here, a deliberate holding on. In waiting, you're not passive; you're actively trusting.
The psalmist speaks now on behalf of 'we' and 'our'—the gathered community or all believers.
This captures the posture of faith throughout Scripture: waiting on the Lord, holding to His promises, and resting in the fact that He is both our help (the one who intervenes) and our shield (the one who protects).
The psalm concludes with the community's confident declaration that their soul (entire being) waits hopefully for the LORD, who serves as their protective help and shield.
The shift from 'the righteous ones' (verse 1) to 'our soul' (nephesh) represents a movement from addressing others to communal self-identification. The 'waiting' (qiwwâ) indicates active trust and anticipation, not passive resignation. The military metaphor of 'shield' returns us to the earlier deflation of military confidence—God alone provides true protection.

This affirmation of trust despite circumstances reflects the trajectory of the entire Psalter—from lamentation through reorientation to confident trust. The 'waiting' posture echoes Abraham's patient faith (Genesis 15:6) and prefigures New Testament patience in tribulation (Romans 5:3-4).

19to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
