Language and setting

The phrase הִשְׁמִיעַ שָׁמַיִם (he-shmia shamayim, 'he parted the heavens') describes a rupture in the cosmic order. Clouds (עָב, av) are elsewhere described as God's chariot (Psalm 104:3), and this imagery draws directly on the Canaanite depiction of Baal as the rider of clouds. The Israelites Yahwehized this language, claiming that their God alone possesses this cosmic authority. The phrase 'dark clouds beneath His feet' simultaneously establishes God's transcendence and His active descent into human history—He is not a distant deity but one who moves decisively toward His people's deliverance.

Significance
