Language and setting

The expression 'apple of your eye' (אִישׁוֹן עֵינְךָ—literally 'pupil of your eye') is extraordinarily intimate language—it refers to the most vulnerable, sensitive, and carefully protected part of the eye. This appears elsewhere for Israel as a corporate entity (Deuteronomy 32:10, Zechariah 2:8). The metaphor of 'shadow of wings' (צֵל־כְּנָפַיִם) invokes the cherubim imagery of the temple and the safety found in God's presence. Both images convey extreme tenderness combined with power—the petitioner is asking to be treated as God's most precious possession.
