In ancient times, people saw the night sky as mysterious and overwhelming. This verse would have amazed them: the God who made all those countless stars also has individual attention for you. It's not a distant Creator but an intimate one.

The naming of stars (*kara lahem shem*) echoes Genesis 1's creative naming formula; calling something by name in Semitic thought constitutes ownership, relationship, and relational knowledge. Origen and later medieval thinkers (particularly Maimonides) saw this as demonstrating God's infinite comprehension vastly exceeding creaturely intellect.
