God surrounds you completely—He's before you and behind you—and He's placed His hand on you with care and authority. You're enclosed in His presence.
The language here shifts slightly. It's not just that God knows you; He's actively positioning Himself around you. The image is protective, like a parent's hand on a child's shoulder.

The verb צוּר (tsur), meaning to form or fashion, appears in the causative form here: God has hemmed in, compressed, enclosed. The spatial imagery shifts from the passive surveillance of verses 1-4 to an active, enveloping presence. The phrase 'laid Your hand upon me' (שַׁתָּ עָלַי כַּפְּךָ) invokes the ancient Near Eastern gesture of possession and protection—the hand as the instrument of both constraint and care. This creates a fundamental tension: the same enclosure that prevents escape also pledges divine protection.
