Psalm 131, attributed to David, is one of the shortest and most intimate psalms in the Psalter—a quiet declaration of humility and contentment. David renounces pride, ambition beyond his calling, and anxious striving, comparing his settled soul to a weaned child resting against its mother. The psalm moves from personal testimony to communal exhortation.
The Davidic attribution is striking given David's tumultuous life of ambition and conflict. The psalm may represent a mature David who has learned the limits of human striving, or it may reflect an idealized royal humility appropriate to pilgrimage.
The weaned-child metaphor is carefully chosen: a weaned child no longer nurses anxiously but rests contentedly in the mother's presence, wanting nothing but proximity. This images a faith that has moved beyond demanding specific blessings to simply resting in God's presence. The psalm's brevity enacts its message—it says only what is necessary.
