Psalm 126 is a communal psalm that oscillates between joyful memory and present petition. The first half recalls the euphoric return from captivity—'We were like those who dream'—when even the nations acknowledged God's great deeds. The second half pivots to urgent prayer for continued restoration, using the agricultural metaphor of sowing in tears and reaping with songs of joy.
The background behind it
The psalm almost certainly refers to the return from Babylonian exile (538 BC), though the ongoing petition for restoration suggests the reality of return fell short of expectations. The 'streams in the Negev' image refers to the seasonal wadis that suddenly fill with life-giving water in the arid south.
Themes running underneath
The psalm holds together realized and unrealized hope: God has already done something magnificent, but the work is not yet complete. The sowing-reaping metaphor introduces a theology of patient faithfulness—tears are not wasted but are seeds of future joy.
