Youth and moral purity is a theme that runs through Scripture—from Joseph's resistance to temptation, to Jesus at 12 years old in the temple, to Timothy receiving Paul's encouragement to live with integrity despite his age. A young person can maintain moral and spiritual purity by deliberately guarding and protecting his behavior in accordance with God's word.
The transition to addressing a 'young man' (נַעַר, na'ar) suggests the psalmist's pedagogical concern—he functions as spiritual mentor, concerned with formation of the next generation during a period when scribal and rabbinic transmission of tradition had become crucial to Jewish identity and survival, particularly in exile or under foreign rule.
