The Israelites became completely morally compromised and spiritually unfaithful. They defiled themselves through their actions and essentially prostituted themselves by turning to false gods and practices.
The language of 'prostitution' is deliberate. Just as a prostitute gives their body to whoever pays, Israel gave their devotion and allegiance to whatever god promised them something. They were spiritually unfaithful to their covenant with God, exchanging His love for empty substitutes.

This language of unfaithfulness echoes through the prophets, especially Hosea, who uses marriage language to describe Israel's covenant with God and their unfaithfulness as infidelity.
Through these accumulated apostasies, Israel defiled itself—both through the cultic violations and through sexual infidelity to God, a spiritual prostitution that corrupted their entire being.
The parallel verbs וַיִּטְמְאוּ (vayitmeyu—defiled) and וַיִּזְנוּ (vayiznu—prostituted themselves, literally committed fornication) employ both cultic-impurity and covenant-infidelity language. Sexual unfaithfulness becomes the metaphor for religious apostasy throughout the prophets (Hosea, Jeremiah); here both literal sexual sin (at Peor) and spiritual infidelity merge into a comprehensive portrait of covenant-breaking. The term זְנוּת (zenut—prostitution) recurs in prophetic critiques of Israel's idolatry; it is the opposite of the exclusive devotion ('single-hearted loyalty') demanded by the covenant.
