During the centuries before the exodus, Abraham's descendants moved around from country to country—Egypt, Canaan, wherever circumstances took them—always as outsiders, never fully settled.
The patriarchs didn't conquer or settle; they wandered. Abraham moved from Mesopotamia to Canaan. Isaac and Jacob lived there but also sojourned in surrounding regions. Later, Jacob's entire family went to Egypt during famine. The point is: they were homeless, dependent, traveling.

Genesis records these journeys in detail—Abraham's travels, Isaac's time among the Philistines, Jacob's flight to Mesopotamia and Egypt, Joseph's sale into Egypt. Each story shows vulnerability and displacement.
The patriarchs wandered across multiple kingdoms and territories, living as refugees without stable settlement.
The repetition 'from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another' (*mgwy l'my mmmlkh l'wm) employs what stylists call *merismic parallelism*—suggesting universal scope by iterating multiple instances. This describes the actual patriarchal movements: Abraham's migrations from Ur to Canaan to Egypt; Isaac and Jacob's relocations. Yet it also prefigures exile and diaspora.
The historical narrator, emphasizing the precariousness and displacement that characterize Israel's origins.
This portrayal of the patriarchs as displaced nomads connects them typologically to later exile: just as Abraham was called out from Ur into displacement, so too will Israel face exile—yet this too occurs within covenantal bounds.

12When they were few in number, few indeed, and strangers in the land,
13they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another.
14He let no man oppress them; He rebuked kings on their behalf:
