Psalm 102:5

A Prayer of the Afflicted

Through my loud groaning my skin hangs on my bones. Psalm 102:5 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Psalm 102:5, in plain English

The groaning is so constant and intense that it's literally changing your body—your skin is hanging from your bones.

Why it's here

This image conveys extreme physical deterioration from prolonged sorrow. The loud groaning suggests both emotional release and perhaps physical pain—the body expressing what the spirit is experiencing. This is someone who has been suffering for a long time.

Who's speaking

The psalmist, describing his visible physical decline.

Where it sits in the story

Throughout Scripture, grief and spiritual distress express themselves in the body. This connection between soul and body, between emotion and physical reality, is woven through biblical understanding of what it means to be human.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

The external manifestation of internal anguish is now visible—the psalmist's groans are audible and his skeletal frame is wasting away.

Language and setting

The phrase 'loud groaning' (קול אנחתי, kol anachati) distinguishes between private suffering and public utterance; the groaning has volume and presence. The image of skin clinging to bones (עור לעצמותי, or le'atzamotai) employs the language of desiccation and appears in Lamentations 1:13 in connection with Zion's destruction, suggesting that personal suffering and communal calamity share phenomenological structure. Medieval commentators, particularly Ibn Ezra, noted that this physical withering contradicts any possibility of recovery through human means.

Voice

The same afflicted individual, now externally manifesting what was internally described in verse 4.

Significance

The progression from internal state to public visibility prepares for the move toward communal recognition and divine action—suffering becomes undeniable, witnessed, and therefore actionable.

In context

Psalm 102:3–7

3For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn like glowing embers.

4My heart is afflicted, and withered like grass; I even forget to eat my bread.

5Through my loud groaning my skin hangs on my bones.

6I am like a desert owl, like an owl among the ruins.

7I lie awake; I am like a lone bird on a housetop.

Read all of Psalm 102 — My days vanish like smoke. My bones burn. But You, O Lord, endure forever. Human frailty meets divine permanence.
