Psalm 102:11

A Prayer of the Afflicted

My days are like lengthening shadows, and I wither away like grass. Psalm 102:11 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Psalm 102:11, in plain English

Your life is slipping away, becoming shorter with each passing day, like grass that dries up and disappears.

Why it's here

The image of lengthening shadows suggests the end of day, the approach of evening—a metaphor for approaching death. Combined with the image of withering grass, this expresses the urgency of the situation. Time is running out, and still there's no relief.

Who's speaking

The psalmist, reflecting on how his life is diminishing.

Where it sits in the story

The brevity of human life is a major theme in Psalms. This reality becomes urgent when you're suffering—without hope of relief, time becomes the enemy, not a gift.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Time itself appears to be elongating and consuming the psalmist—his remaining days are lengthening shadows at sunset, and his strength continues to fade.

Language and setting

The image of lengthening shadows (צללי כמשׁך, tzelai kameshekh) suggests the optical illusion of the approaching sunset wherein shadows extend long and thin before darkness falls completely. This is temporal anxiety expressed through visual metaphor. The return to the grass metaphor (יבשׁ כעשׂב, yavash ka'esev) creates structural parallelism with verse 4, suggesting cyclical deterioration rather than linear progression. The medieval Jewish exegete David Kimhi interpreted this as the psalmist watching his remaining lifespan diminish like the day's light.

Voice

The individual, returning to corporeal metaphor after the theological claim of verse 10.

Significance

This cyclical reiteration of decay prepares for the radical theological pivot: the psalmist's temporal collapse will contrast dramatically with God's eternal throne, established in verse 12.

In context

Psalm 102:9–13

9For I have eaten ashes like bread and mixed my drink with tears

10because of Your indignation and wrath, for You have picked me up and cast me aside.

11My days are like lengthening shadows, and I wither away like grass.

12But You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; Your renown endures to all generations.

13You will rise up and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show her favor— the appointed time has come.

Read all of Psalm 102 — My days vanish like smoke. My bones burn. But You, O Lord, endure forever. Human frailty meets divine permanence.
