Throughout Proverbs, flattery is described as a trap. It feels good, which is exactly why it works. It bypasses reasoning and speaks directly to your desire to feel valued.

The scholarly reading

She claims deliberate pursuit of him—that she has sought him out specifically and has now found him—establishing an illusion of destiny and personal selection.

Language and setting

The claim 'I sought you and have found you' (דרשׁתיך ואמצאך, darashtīkh va'amtsa'eḥ) employs language typically associated with covenant-seeking or divine finding. It flatters him as special, chosen, sought-after. In reality, of course, she sought 'the simple' (verse 7) generally—he is interchangeable. But the illusion of unique selection is psychologically powerful. This mirrors the seduction pattern identified by Augustine and later psychologists: the victim is made to feel chosen.

Significance
