The Woman of Valor

A man can trust such a woman completely with his life and interests; she won't let him down, and he'll never lack what truly matters.
In a patriarchal society, this is saying something radical—the wife is so trustworthy and capable that the husband doesn't have to constantly monitor her or fear she's ruining things. He can trust her judgment. 'Lacks nothing of value' means she ensures their household is secure and their needs are met.

This echoes the creation story where God saw that it wasn't good for man to be alone and provided a helper. The best marriages in Scripture are built on this kind of mutual trust and respect—not domination, but partnership.

The phrase 'the heart of her husband trusts in her' (בַטַח בָהּ לְבַב אִישׁ, batach bah levav ish) employs batach, which denotes not casual confidence but the profound trust one places in something proven reliable over time. This is earned trust, built on demonstrated faithfulness. The parallel construction—'he lacks nothing of value'—uses שׁלׁל (shalal), which can mean plunder or gain, suggesting abundance and security. In the patriarchal context of ancient Israel, this verse is remarkable: it grants the wife instrumental significance to the household's wellbeing and positions her as the source of her husband's security.
