The Hebrew קנא (kana, 'envy') represents not mere aesthetic admiration but covetous longing to possess what another has; paired with the violent man (אִישׁ חָמָס, ish chamas), it captures the temptation to admire ruthless efficacy. The phrase 'choose any of his ways' (וְאַל־תִּבְחַר בַּכּל־דְרָכָיו, we-al-tibchar ba-kol-drakav) suggests the student might be drawn not just to envy outcome but to replicate method. This verse addresses a psychological reality: the ruthless person often appears to prosper, creating cognitive dissonance with wisdom teaching. The counter-assertion comes in the next verses.
