When you're living by wisdom, even your rest is undisturbed—you sleep without anxiety, with a clear conscience and a sense of security that no amount of wealth alone can buy.
Sleep anxiety was real then as now. The teacher is saying that a guilty conscience or the consequences of foolish choices steal your peace, while wisdom gives you genuine rest. This matters because rest and mental peace are precious.

This resonates with the Psalms, where the psalmist lies down in peace because he trusts God and his own choices reflect that trust. It's the opposite of the restlessness described for the wicked throughout Scripture.
The person who lives wisely enjoys peace of mind and genuine rest—untroubled sleep and freedom from the anxiety that plagues the wicked.
Sleep and rest (שׁנה, shehnah and שׁכב, shakhav) were understood in ancient wisdom literature as barometers of inner peace; the ability to sleep soundly indicated a clear conscience and freedom from the psychological torment that pursued the guilty. The Proverbs teacher knew that anxiety—what we might call the physiological consequence of moral compromise—disrupts rest, whereas the integrated self experiences עדן (edon), or sweetness, even in sleep. This verse moves from external security (v. 23) to internal peace.

This prefigures the Gospel promise of Jesus offering 'rest for your souls' (Matthew 11:28) and reflects the Hebraic understanding that shalom (peace) encompasses bodily wholeness, not merely spiritual abstraction.
22They will be life to your soul and adornment to your neck.
23Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.
24When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you rest, your sleep will be sweet.
25Do not fear sudden danger or the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
26for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from the snare.
