The tree of life appears in Genesis and Revelation—it's the source of life itself. By calling wisdom a tree of life, the teacher is saying: she's not just helpful advice, she's essential to actually living. Without her, you're dying.

In Genesis 3, humanity lost access to the tree of life through disobedience and foolishness. Throughout Scripture, we see people searching for the way back to life. In Revelation, the tree of life is restored to those who follow Christ. Jesus is our life; His wisdom is our tree of life.

The 'tree of life' (etz ha-chayim) recalls the garden of Eden narrative (Genesis 2:9, 3:22), where access to the tree conferred immortality and life. The term appears again in Revelation 2:7 and 22:2, suggesting continuity from creation through redemption. To grasp or embrace wisdom (literally, 'lay hold of her'—tachazeq bah) is to seize life itself. The verb suggests active appropriation, not passive reception; one must be willing to embrace and hold fast.

This verse is the apex of Proverbs 3's hymn to wisdom and establishes a trajectory that runs through all of scripture: the quest for life. In Christian interpretation, the tree of life becomes explicitly Christological—Christ is the source of eternal life, and to abide in Him is to have 'life to the full' (John 10:10). The eucharistic imagery of eating from the tree of life (Revelation 2:7) suggests that partaking of Christ is the fulfillment of what Proverbs here promises through wisdom. Medieval theologians would argue that Christ is the substance to which wisdom points.
