The image of the extinguished lamp (nir rasha'im yida'ak) draws on ancient Near Eastern imagery where the lamp represents life, lineage, and legacy (as in 2 Samuel 21:17's 'lamp of Israel'). The verb yida'ak (will be extinguished, go dark) is absolute and permanent.
