Don't Wear Yourself Out
The father of a righteous man will greatly rejoice, and he who fathers a wise son will delight in him. Proverbs 23:24 · Berean Standard Bible
When your child grows up to be wise and righteous, your joy as a parent is almost impossible to contain—and that joy is exactly what you should be aiming for.
This verse assumes something beautiful: parents want their children to succeed morally and spiritually, not just financially. The father's delight isn't about bragging rights; it's about seeing your child become a good person. In ancient culture, a righteous son meant the family line was secure in character, not just survival.

The verse employs two slightly different formulations: the righteous man's father will 'greatly rejoice' (yāgîl) while the father of a wise son will 'take delight' (yiśmaḥ)—suggesting both the deep satisfaction of moral vindication and the particular pleasure of intellectual respect. In patriarchal societies, a son's character reflected directly on the father's reputation and legacy; thus these emotions are not sentimental but deeply bound up with honor, inheritance, and communal standing.
