Don't even walk that road with them, my son—don't join their group, don't spend time around them, don't let yourself become part of their world even in small ways.

Solomon's response to the enticement is absolute and immediate. He's not saying 'consider your options carefully' or 'maybe some of it is okay.' He's drawing a clear boundary: don't set foot on their path. There's no middle ground here. He understands that you become like the people you spend time with.

This echoes throughout Scripture: separation from evil isn't narrow-mindedness; it's wisdom. Paul would later write about not being 'unequally yoked' with those living in darkness. It's about protecting your own soul.

The father's counter-imperative is absolute: do not travel with them; do not even set foot on their path—create complete separation.

Language and setting

The dual negation ('do not walk... do not set foot') emphasizes totality. The father recognizes that proximity is itself corrupting; there is no 'walking along' with criminals while maintaining moral distance. The Hebrew derek (way or path) implies a trajectory toward a destination—and he's directing his son away from that destination entirely.

Significance

This prefigures Paul's command in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 to be unequally yoked with unbelievers—the conviction that some associations are inherently compromising and must be rejected entirely.
